Although we hadn't booked into the Thistle Hotel we decided to try the restaurant for an evening meal.
Disappointment one,
Apparently If you order your meal between 5.30 - 6.30 pm you get ?5.00 off. We asked could we order a meal at 6.20 but our order was not taken until 6.40 so we missed out on the ?5 discount.
Disappointment 2 The Food
The sauce that accompanied the lamb dish tasted very very salty, and was not edible. The veg and crushed potatoes with this dish were very small portions. ,
Vegetarian Main c.ourse was meagre more like a starter, a filo basket with aubergines,courgettes and goats cheese. No accompanying side order, not even a leaf of lettuce. We could have called into a takeaway on the way home.
Overall for the price it was very unsatisfactory
ie Two courses for ?19.95
Highlight: Waiting staff did their best.

I stayed for 2 nights at the Thistle mid July and found the room to be clean & tidy. Only problem with the room is the heat. Too warm for me, lucky there was a fan in the room. Avoid the rip off breakfasts or meals, Newcastle has pleny of food outlets beside the hotel that are cheaper.
It's ideally located for getting around the city & being across the street from the main railway station you cannot ask for more than that.
Would recommend the hotel if you are on a weekend visit shopping/partying or just looking for a reasonable place to stay.
