Excelsior Hotel Ernst am Dom - Cologne, Germany

Staying in Cologne for two nights in november (when the weather can be unpleasant), with the cathedral as the primary interest, the location of this hotel was ideal. The church was nearly right across the street (much closer than indicated on the map on venere.com). It had an old-fashioned charm with respect to both interiors and service, and the personnel was friendly and helpful above average - indeed, glad; they seemed to enjoy what they were doing. The atmosphere in the restaurant was perhaps more formal, maybe tending to stiffness, but I do not complain about that - isn't such places an endangered species nowadays?

I just stayed one night in the recently innovated section of the hotel. They room had some problem with electricity supply which I believe will solve soon, after they operate some weeks.

je regrette que les instructions ne soient r?dig?es qu'en allemand et en anglais. Je ne parle que tr?s peu ces deux langues par contre je parle normalement le fran?ais et l'espagnol. j'aurais aim? pouvoir lire les documents qu'on me pr?sentait. Pour un hotel de cette classe situ? ? 70 km d'un pays o? on parle le fran?ais, je trouve cela inadmissible. Et c'est la raison qui me fait dire que je ne retournerai plus dans cet hotel.

Very welcoming, conscientious, courteous front desk staff. Room was a junior suite on fifth floor, furnishings were new, bed was comfortable, bathroom was sparkling clean with new fixtures. Maid service was excellent. Free minibar was a welcome touch. Location is unbeatable, one minute by foot from Central Station and thirty seconds from cathedral. Breakfast not included in Venere price and would have been EUR 16 but there is a delicious breakfast buffet for EUR 11.90 from 0830 at the classic cafe/pastry shop across the cathedral plaza from hotel. I will gladly stay at the Excelsior again and would highly recommend it.
