3We stayed at Motel One, Koeln mid December 2006. We booked directly via the hotel paying approx 55 / night for a double incl breakfast.
This motel certainly is not luxury, but in its category it is above average. Situated near A1/A4 inter change on the outskirts of Koeln, it is very good value for money. The rooms contain a double bed with a single bed above – bunk style. Each room has a small bathroom with shower & toilet; however the sink is unfortunately in the main part of the room. Rooms have TV but no telephone or fridge. Wifi available at a charge.
Although this motel is good value for money you should expect no more than exactly that……a motel
Plusses
- Very good quality buffet breakfast. Surprisingly, better than the average chain-hotel.
- Clean, reasonably sized room
- Simple, modern interior design. Pleasant colour scheme
- Free parking
- Cheap
Minuses
- Sink in the room ..... not in the bathroom!!!!!
- the building as well as the rooms are charmless and impersonal – it’s a motel after all!!!!
- It takes at least 40 minutes to get into town by public transport
- Although smoke-free rooms are available this hotel (unlike others in this chain) is not smoke-free. This is especially noticeable in parts of the breakfast room
- No fridge (believe there is a vending machine in the hall)
Tips:
- If you have made a reservation and will be arriving after 2200 ensure you have your code as you can only enter using a check-in terminal
- Getting into town: best to take a tram which takes approx 25 minutes. Weekdays every 10-15 minutes. Weekends: early morning once an hour, day time twice an hour. To get to the tram you have two options: walk (15 minutes) to “Marsdorf” tram stop. Or drive (3 min) to the Park&Ride by “Haus Vorst” tram stop (24/7 free parking). Make sure you have change for the tram ticket (2, 20 Euro per person)
- Bring your own toiletries; only bar of hand soap supplied
- Food: on the main road (10 min walk) there is a restaurant called “Beckers Backsstube” tucked away near McDonalds. In the same block there is also a Greek restaurant (open ‘till 2300 on weekends).
The “Backstube” has a limited dinner menu but looks much more inviting than the Greek. The latter has an uninspiring décor, unimpressive French fries but good meat and good portions. The “Backstube” is also open for breakfast which can be recommended if you have missed the breakfast at the hotel. (closed on Sundays)
- Supermarket: the “Maxus” you can see from the hotel is large and excellent for stocking up on German goodies if you are by car. Open till 2200 Fri, Sat
