2.7We lamented for days over which hotel to stay at for our brief stay in Cologne. We debated between the Sofitel near the Conference center which was considerably cheaper but a bit away (over the bridge), and then the Excelsior was just a bit more expensive. For our short weekend stay in Jan 2008, the location couldnt be better--perfectly located right near the Dom Cathedral and the train station and just minutes from the Rhein river, the Ludwig museum, the good restaurants including Fruh am Dom, and cool Breweries/ pubs serving kolsch and great shopping.
The hotel receptionists were very courteous and super efficient, the concierge had great advice about where to eat/ what to do, and even the house keeping staff were great. The hotel restaurant / bar was convenient and --for a night cap or a quick coffee. The room was a good size--ours had a view of the Fruh am dom restaurant though our bathroom window overlooked the Dom (apparently only the executive suites have views of the Cathedral). As for the Dom bells ringing at night--it seemed like they reduced the volume on the chimes or stopped it...it didnt affect my sleep.
