Location

Boppard is one of the most charming cities in the Middle Rhine Valley and lies on the banks of the river's largest bend. The town’s long, rich history is evident at every turn: a Roman church, a Gothic church, beautiful timber-framed houses, old monasteries, courts of nobility, remains of the Medieval city wall, and the Kurtrierisch Castle (home to the municipal museum with a remarkable collection of Thonet furniture). Especially noteworthy are the remains of a 4th-Century Roman fort, the best-preserved Roman fortifications in Germany.

Further attractions include boat trips, a lift to a viewpoint overlooking the town and the Rhine Valley, the Hunsrückbahn mountain railway (one of the steepest stretches of railway in Germany), and a 200-kilometre network of hiking trails. By taking a walk along the wine information trail you can get to know the various grapes of the "Bopparder Hamm" vineyards.

We had a pleasant 6 night stay at Hotel Gunther. It is a good location for exploring the Rhine. The owners were very hospitable and informative. The room was large with a great balcony view. Breakfast was included and offered a good choice. The only bothersome thing was the dirty towels we left on the floor were picked up by the cleaning staff and folded nicely and hung for us to reuse.

We took an apartment at the Hotel in a separate building owned by the proprietors behind the main hotel. I think the rooms had recently been done up as some work was still going on during daylight hours. This was ?62 per night and well worth the price. Lovely bathroom, nice big shower with good pressure, lovely comfortable sofa, and a pair of euro-style beds. I was staying there with a friend so at first we were a bit disappointed that we couldn't get two singles, but we discovered that while the bed had a double (king?) base, it was two mattresses and two duvets - so it was as if they were single beds. Perfect. Breakfast was excellent, and the proprietors let us store our suitcases with them after checking out so we could look around the town before catching our ferry up to Cologne. We'd definitely stay here again, and I highly recommend it.
