Main attractions

lisbon can best be seen by strolling through the typical neighbourhoods of alfama or bairro alto, hopping on board a tram, taking a boat along the river, or even by using lisbon's underground, with its decorative stations, many of which are true works of art by Well-Known portuguese artists.

Apart from the vast choice of museums throughout the city, a visit to belém - west of the city - is an absolute must, with its gardens, the torre de belém and the jerónimos monastery, both classified by unesco as world heritage. Next door, the modern centro cultural de belém, the 18th century coach museum and the Never-To-Be-Forgotten local pastries, the pastéis de belém.

East of the city, the brand new parque das nações (Ex-Expo'98) with a variety of leisure attractions, including the oceanarium, widely considered to be one of the best in the world.

May we suggest a tour?

Panorama lisbon
see lisbon from a new perspective. Visit the city's impressive monumental area and travel in portugal's most modern form of transport.
Come aboard our most recent tour, in a luxurious coach, which goes from the city centre (parque eduardo vii) to the ancient area of belém (where you will visit the mosteiro dos jerónimos, torre de belém, monumento dos descobrimentos and the coches museum.
You will then be driven to a downtown train station, to take a modern, Double-Decker train with Air-Conditioned carriages, complete with background music. Crossing the river tagus, lisbon is magnificently laid out at your feet. On your way back, your tour ends at entrecampos station. (return trip to the hotel is not included).

Charms of lisbon
a half day tour, to visit the oceanarium, both bridges spanning the river tagus and the monumental area of belém. Departure to the parque das nações (former expo'98), to visit the lisbon oceanarium, where five main habitats have been recreated - large, central tank, representing the open seas, and four coastal habitats, the rocky north atlantic coast, the sandy atlantic coasts, the temperate pacific, and the tropical indian coral habitat.
Altogether, more than 30 tanks make up the oceanarium, which contains over 7,000m3 of saltwater. The habitats and their fauna and flora were carefully reproduced, respecting geological and climatic factors and even the local sounds and music.
After visiting the oceanarium, our tour will take you along the vasco da gama bridge, with its breathtaking view of the tagus riverbanks and the parque das nações.
Back to lisbon, via the 25 de abril bridge, from with the city's riverbanks spread out at your feet and the towering cristo rei (christ the king) monument.
You will arrive at the monumental area of belém, an example of true manueline art, with its two masterpieces: the jerónimos monastery and the torre de belém. Our panoramic tour ends with a visit of the commemorative padrão dos descobrimentos.

Viewpoints
lisbon's seven hills, the endless neighbourhoods and the unique southern light, have captivated writers, photographers and painters for many years.
See the city from the many viewpoints - ST george's castle, são pedro de alcântara, graça, santa catarina or even from the other side of the river tagus, from the cristo rei monument.

We have just come back from 4 days in Lisbon at the Tivoli Jardim. The hotel has been recently refurbished & only reopened at the start of May. Although it is now very modern & smart there are still many problems. The swimming pool is not open & there are workmen crawling all over the hotel. They are still bringing in furniture, beds & TV's & for all the time we were there only one of the two lifts were working with no aopparent attempt to have the other one working. Also the stairs could not be used & were fenced off(Fire risk!) Our room had no drawers or shelves for clothes etc. & hair dryer had to be requested. The breakfast is ok but they do not have bread & a bread toasting machine & replenishment of the hot breakfast (every day - scrambled egg, bacon (thin) & mushrooms) is very very slow. The hotel is well situated but they do need to get their act together.

The Tivoli Jardim was chosen by my Portuguese colleagues and having checked it out on the net I discovered that it had only reopened last week after a major refurbishment, or at least that was the idea. When I arrived it was clear that the builders were still in. The black tiled lobby area was covered in dusty builder footprints and the sound of hammering etc. was everywhere. When I checked in I was told that none of the smoking rooms were ready yet as only four floors were completed and none of the rooms were smoking, however the rooms come with a balcony so no problem there. When I went to my room it was clear that even the so called completed rooms were nothing of the kind. The peephole in the door was only covered with what looked like chewing gum and what was even more problematic was that the room had no electricity at all. And yes I did stick my card in plug to activate the power but to no avail. I gathered my luggage and went back in the elevator. The elevator comes with numbers and letters so unsure what level was the lobby in Portuguese I thought I play it safe and pressed one and the next couple of letters. The elevator stopped at the first floor and I was greeted by dozens of builders frantically rebuilding the hotel. The door closed and there I was for the next 10 minutes. Nothing was moving, up or down. Eventually the elevator released me on the very same floor. Slightly agitated I made my way across building material back to reception. While waiting I overheard the receptionist telling another guest checking in that the internet was not yet working. Brilliant! On a work trip and no net access. It was clear that this hotel made the colossal mistake of opening too soon to maximise profit at the expense of the paying customers. As the Tivoli group has another hotel 100 yards away (Tivoli Lisboa) I demanded that they check me in there. In fairness to the staff they did not even try to defend the state of the hotel. It was clear that by middle of May 08 this was still a considerable building site, weeks off from completion. When booking the Tivoli Jardim check that their work has been completed and the builders are gone. All I can say that it looked nice and probably has great potential when it is clean, the elevator works and you have electricity and internet access in your room, but only then….
