If you're going to the New Forest, this is the least pretentious small hotel around. They have terrific variety of rooms, and most are really quiet even though they do not all face the garden. The dining room is excellent and there are large guest lounges for sitting and reading or enjoying a lazing fire on a cold and possibly rainy day.

Having been overbooked at another hotel we made our reservation the afternoon of our arrival. We arrived rather stressed and weary at 2.30 in the morning, but were immediately soothed by the wonderful Night Porter, Brian, who made everything feel OK and who couldn't do enough to help. As my husband has breathing difficulties and our room was rather a long way from the entrance, Brian even made sure we were phoned by Reception in the morning to see if we wanted to change rooms. Service throughout the hotel was extremely pleasant and personal. All much appreciated.
