Hotel Mignon, just inside the walls of Avignon, is a family-run hotel that was a pleasure to stay at. We had a simple continental breakfast every morning - croissant, baguette, orange juice, and choice of coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Our room was clean, well-kept, and decorated prettily. We did not feel cramped in the room, although it was not large by american standards, it was plenty big enough for two adults and our luggage. The bathroom was tiny but everything worked - including decent water pressure in the small shower. We were on the 1st floor (only one set of stairs) and I'm glad we weren't higher, after our days spent climbing around mountain-top villages. The hotel is unpretentious, but the hotel-keeper was very nice, recommending a great restaurant, and offering to give us breakfast early on our check-out day so we could leave in time for the TGV. I've paid more and gotten far worse rooms and distinctly worse service in US budget motels. The hotel is situated perfectly - a couple blocks from the Place l'Horloge (the heart of the old town) and a couple to the Place Crillon and the Walls, on a very quiet street. We stayed in 3 hotels during our two week stay (the others were officially higher quality) and this was our favorite hotel.
