5We had a fantastic short break at the Golden Well to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and only wish we could have stayed longer! We both felt that this must be the best hotel we have ever stayed in, for a number of reasons.
Firstly, it has awonderful location at the foot of Prague Castle, in easy walking distance of the main tourist sights. The breakfast terrace has beautiful views of the city, and there is even a hidden gateway in the dining room which leads up a few steps into the Castle grounds.
The staff provide an excellent, attentive and friendly service, including a welcome drink on the terrace with tips on some of the fascinating parts of the city. We were touched to receive a bottle of wine, cake, and fruit to help us celebrate our anniversary.
The breakfasts are fantastic - as well as as an above-average buffet, there is a menu of gourmet hot dishes prepared by the chef, including Eggs Benedict, pancakes and ommelettes. These are all served in either the attractive breakfast room or the terrace which both have fine views over the city. There is also a guests lounge with hot water and tea bags always available, and complimentary wine and amuse bouches served at around 5pm
The hotel has been beautifully converted from a historic house, used by the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II to lodge his court astronomer Tycho Brahe, and the charm of the building is complemented by the antique furnishings and pictures. We had a fair-sized room, with a comfortable bed, whirlpool bath and satellite TV, all in excellent condition and kept very clean.
This is a truly wonderful hotel, and it's location and historic character make it the perfect base for a visit to Prague. Because the hotel is situated in a narrow cobbled alley, a car cannot be driven right up to the front door, although porters and drivers are very helpful with bags.
