It's Just a Hotel With Unfriendly StaffPosted: Tue, May 27 2008Location:

2I stayed here the first week of May. Reception is just next to the dismal bar and one afternoon while sitting there alone with my laptop, I found myself in need to tend to my airplane head cold. I asked the desk clerk for a tissue and was given one - along with the admonishment that if I needed more, I would have to leave the hotel to purchase a box. I consider such behavior to be the legacy of the Soviet occupation, and no, I did not expect that she should have wiped my nose for me.
Not all of the staff are so unhelpful. I tipped the maid CZK 300 on the second day and ended up with heaps of towels instead of just one. I should have asked for a second pillow, too.
I have larger closets than the room I was assigned. It wasn't so bad just for me as I was traveling alone, but it was the smallest hotel room I had ever seen. I believe hostels may offer more spacious accommodation. I could not connect to the wireless with my laptop except in the bar and reception area.
There is only one sheet on the bed and one pillow. In place of the topsheet is a covered duvet. A window that doesn't open to the wall of the adjacent building would have been nice as Prague weather is spotty in May and there was very little light in this miniscule cell.
The location is great. There are two concert halls within easy walking distance. There is little nightlife in the general area, but there is good shopping at the nearby Palladium.
Except for one or two days when I awoke in time for breakfast, which is not bad, I stayed well away from the restaurant in favor of a charming little Cuban restaurant, La Bodeguita Del Medio. The restaurant with the Pilsner Urquell umbrellas in the same building wiht the concet hall just down the block offers a nice lunch. On the opposite end of te same building is a more formal restaurant offering prix fixe meals and an a' la carte menu. I took the full course prix fixe offerig and found it wonderful. The sommlier offered up an outrageously luxurious Frenc Bordeaux which paired perfectly with the meal. Expect to spend about $200 per person with a bottle of wine.
The hotel offers a reasonable price. I even attacked the minibar a few times and my bill at check out was a pleasant surprise. If you want to visit Prague and only want a place to sleep, this hotel might be considered to be acceptable. Just be prepared to pay the additional price for the visit to your physician for the Prozac your going to needafter staying in this depressing place.
My advice? Spend a few more Crowns and find a nicer hotel. I hate Prozac.
Side Note - ALWAYS ask the driver for a price before getting into a taxi. A trip to a restaurant cost CZK 200 when I asked first. On the return (damn those mojitios!), I forgot to ask and CZK 500 was demanded. I threw a crumpled CZK 200 note to the driver, told him to screw off, and went on my way. I suppose he knew he was attempting thievery as he didn't prostest much as I walked away.
