Angleterre Hotel - Berlin, Germany     

Poorly decorated. Average hotel, ok for a few days. Nothing much to write about....

I booked 3 rooms for a group of friends who were spending the weekend in Berlin, so we wanted to get a decent, central hotel, but at a reasonable price. I made initial checks with Tripadvisor then phoned Hotels.com to make the booking. During the phonecall, the total price of my booking dropped by over 100 euros, making it cost only ?60 per person for 2 nights. This was excellent value given the location and standard of the hotel. It is very close to Checkpoint Charlie and is on one of the main streets in Berlin. The rooms were very clean and everything was as you would expect. The facade of the hotel is old and attractive, but the main section inside feels more like a business hotel, with the rooms conjuring up a feel of a classic capital city mid-range Hilton or Marriot. There is another section of the building to the left of reception which is decorated in a much older and more interesting style, with a grand staircase leading upstairs. We had a room in this part of the hotel for the 2nd night and it was far bigger (we needed an extra bed, so it had to be), with high ceilings and far more character. The bathrooms were identical in all rooms. There is a lovely Turkish coffee shop opposite the hotel that sells delicious cakes and wonderful lattes. The direct area that you are in boarders on one of the less safe parts of Berlin, so keep to main streets or get taxis if walking here late at night.
