Location

Vesterbro - the former red light district:
During the last ten years Vesterbro has undergone a massive transformation and is no longer the bad neighbourhood where it was not entirely safe to go at night. Instead it is now an attractive and fashionable place to live and hang out.

Hang out at Halmtorvet:
On Halmtorvet, a former red light district in Copenhagen, a number of cafes and restaurants have opened during the last years and during summertime the sidewalks are crowded with tables of people sipping coffee.

Hip boutiques with unique clothing on Vesterbro:
Vesterbro, Copenhagen's former working class district, has become one of the city's most hip areas. The far end of Istedgade is a must for those seeking unusual fashion design. Many up-and-coming designers of clothing have established themselves with interesting boutiques and workrooms in the back. Parallel Vesterbrogade follows up with a number of good specialist shops.

Wonderful small hotel with relaxed, friendly atmosphere and stylish furnishings. Sumptuous organic breakfasts and dinner buffets, a welcome drink on the house, lovely outdoor terrace where we ate meals on handmade Talavera potteryware. "Hyggeligt" indeed! Our junior suite had a small balcony with teak chairs overlooking the terrace and a comfortable fourposter bed with down comforters. Friendly, helpful staff with service a bit cramped in the tiny lobby. We rented bikes at the hotel and rode all over Copenhagen. Bertram's was an oasis of warmth and comfort after three hectic weeks of touring Europe.

We like boutique hotels, and the Bertrams Hotel Guldsmeden met all of our expectations. Our 18-day vacation combined several days in Scandinavia with a 10-day cruise; for our last night before flying back to the USA, we wanted something unusual but comfortable. The hotel was great; highlights were the charming rooms and very friendly staff. As should be expected in this type of hotel, individual rooms are unique. Our friends had a superior standard room that included a small balcony and great shower; our small suite was beautiful, and replaced the shower with an interesting soaking tub and hand-held shower attachment. All of their soaps and gels are organic; our breakfast included a wide range of organic cheeses and eggs, as well as freshly baked breads. The hotel is located on one of the main streets, about 15 minutes walking distance from Tivoli Gardens. There is a bus stop right outside the door of the hotel, which provides easy access to most of the popular tourist attractions. The staff was wonderful, providing directions to a genuine Danish-style restaurant for our last evening, and helped us reserve a taxi for our trip to the airport. We enjoyed it – nice finish to a great vacation!
