What Travellers Like

Stayed at the North Garden Hotel in Beijing for three nights and was very happy about it. The best thing is the location, right next to Wangfujing Road (shopping and some restaurants), not far from Tiananmen Sq and the Forbidden City and very close to a metro station to take you to other parts of the huge city. The room and the bathroom was clean and quiet and we had a nice view over the rooftops. I was afraid that the staff would not speak any English but their English turned out to be ok. The staff was also very helpful with getting taxis (and explaining them the adress) etc. There is a hairdesser, a sauna and massage at the hotel.. Read review

We chose the North Garden based on a friend's recommendation - it's more economical than some and is rated 4 stars in China (which seems to be a wide range there). It is a great location - a half-block off a major pedestrian shopping street and also walking distance to the Forbidden City and Tianamen Square. The breakfast buffet was quite good - you can eat well there and may or may not need a lunch later on. The staff was very pleasant and helpful to us - a few spoke English. The rooms were ok - they had a room safe, which I appreciated. Our room's window faced the inner atrium, so the view wasn't that great, but we were touring most of the day, so it didn't matter much. Bathroom was fine & really no complaints.. Read review

Recommended restaurants nearby including the tourist driven "night market" which is over by 10 some nights. Room fine and up to international standards of comfort. Check to see if a phone deposit is required. Admittedly the size of the group was a factor.. Read review

The hotel had a great non-smoking floor, we stayed in four rooms (2 in each in two different visits). THe people at the door, the hotel staff at reception and when called upon, housekeeping, and the breakfast were phenomenally helpful. We had a single problem, every time in every room, with the air-conditioning. After a few tries (no more than two), an enginneer came up, accessed the unit from the bathroom, and twoenty minutes later the room was nice and cool (22C); however this has to be done every 2-3 days for reasons that I do not understand.. Each room had to be checked and many fraudulent damaged were claimed: makeup on a cloth, a missing laundry bag that had not been replaced, a missing towel. This held up departure in a most annoying way as charges were contested with the staff.
