"Sweet Dreams at The Hotel"

We went to Zurich with a friend this last summer, and we had the best experience we ever have at the St. Gotthard, the service was very good since the beginning. Their is a shuttle from airport to the hotel with a very good price. At the hotel they did the reservation for the shuttle to pick us up from the hotel the next day. At the St. Gotthard everybody make us feel like family. The room was very nice overlooking the river and downtown, we did have a balcony that we were able to open it and it was very fresh and convenient. When I went to bed the feather cover was soooooo good... it was like having silk in your body and make me feel and rest very good. I truly believe that I will go to the St. Gotthard again and again. Enjoy the hotel and Zurich and LOCATION LOCATION...

Zurich is a city that I happen to love, and up until very recently, I had never had a less than satisfactory stay at a hotel there. Two weeks ago, however, I stayed at the Hotel St. Gottard and for 385 Swiss Francs(about $375 USD) I was placed in a room, which although clean was only a little larger than a shoebox, and which was not soundproofed in the least. As a result, in the afternoon I was treated to what seemed to be a continuous series of the contemporary musical hits of Arabia played by some generous soul down the hall. Not to be outdone, after midnight, some woman in a nearby room had a one and one half hour loud, repetitive, and I regret to say, also idiotic, telephone conversation which woke me up and to which I was forced to listen to in a mixture of English and some Middle Eastern language which I could not identify. Needless to say, I was impressed by this display of multi-culturalism hosted by the St. Gotthard, but I would have been much happier just to have some uninterupted sleep, or at least simple quietude--and no unnecessary music, thank you, unless it is Mozart.

On paper, the St Gotthard has it all - good location on the Banhofstrasse (main shopping street), an impressive facade, and a swag of celebrities that have stayed there in the past. However, once you step in, it feels like you've gone back to the 1930s and that the hotel has been stuck in a kind of time warp. That's only the beginning - I've stayed in this hotel quite a number of times, but I am constantly amazed that they always find a way to make the stay not "seamless". From non functioning bathrooms, to broken internet connections, not working air conditioning units, mishandling of laundry ... the list goes on! I think the staff do try hard, but the hotel seems to suffer from a chronic lack of investment - in updating the rooms (the rooms are now being redecorated but in a very cheap fashion) and in staff training (with more uniform standards of service). Overall, I would rate the hotel to be more like a 2 star establishment, rather than the 4 stars that they claim to be. As they charge like a 4 star establishment, this makes them poor value for money.
