1.4Zurich is a city that I happen to love, and up until very recently, I had never had a less than satisfactory stay at a hotel there. Two weeks ago, however, I stayed at the Hotel St. Gottard and for 385 Swiss Francs(about $375 USD) I was placed in a room, which although clean was only a little larger than a shoebox, and which was not soundproofed in the least. As a result, in the afternoon I was treated to what seemed to be a continuous series of the contemporary musical hits of Arabia played by some generous soul down the hall. Not to be outdone, after midnight, some woman in a nearby room had a one and one half hour loud, repetitive, and I regret to say, also idiotic, telephone conversation which woke me up and to which I was forced to listen to in a mixture of English and some Middle Eastern language which I could not identify. Needless to say, I was impressed by this display of multi-culturalism hosted by the St. Gotthard, but I would have been much happier just to have some uninterupted sleep, or at least simple quietude--and no unnecessary music, thank you, unless it is Mozart.
