We were staying in Clacton for a family function and were recommended to stay at the hotel by my family who live in Clacton, although we did have some doubts after reading the previous review! However the new owners have made lots of changes to the decor and the restaurant was lovely, we had sunday lunch there before we left. The staff have nice smart uniforms and we were made to feel very welcome. The bar and nightclub seemed very popular and although there was some noise this was not excessive and seemed to be coming more from outside than inside the hotel, which to be honest I would have expected from a town centre location. All in all we were plesantly surprised and would stay there again

We booked in order to stay overnight after a friend's wedding. The staff were friendly, however the room left a lot to be desired, especially for £60. The room was not cleaned when we checked in - surely the receptionist (actually bar staff from the downstairs pub) would give us either a cleaned room or advise that we return later. It was a smoking room, uncleaned so the room stank of smoke and had numerous cigarette butts in the ashtray - even though we had requested a non-smoking room. There was loud noise from a nearby nightclub, though to be fair I knew this before arrival. There was no lightbulb in the ceiling light fitting! We had to make do with the bedside light. The advertised car parking was on-street parking, which by the time we arrived back after the wedding was all taken - eventually found a space some distence away. The floorboards creaked in the passage outside the room. Therefore, I would use this hotel as a last resort only. Good points - full English breakfast included, when told about my girlfriend's Coeliac diesease the waitress didn't bring the fried bread (though she did bring a sausage, it is unlikely to have been a gluten free one). Overall, a poor hotel. Bad points: The room was not cleaned when we checked in. It was a smoking room. There was loud noise from a nightclub. There was no lightbulb in the ceiling light fitting. The advertised car parking was on-street parking. Good points: Location, friendly staff
