Store Kro is nice for the history and the storytelling about the castle and the surrounding of this small Danish town. Five minutes away you have the summer residence of the Queen and the home of the Crown Prince family. All over the property you will find pictures, furnitures and items with the royal edge.
It's not a deluxe place and its very old. Our room was ok, and we loved the terrace with a view of the garden. It's clean and easy - but you miss the little extra as I would expect from one of the most well-know places of Denmark.
Its overall charming and its nice to have your after dinner coffee in one of the room beside the restaurant. The food was ok, not a success, service are average but the atmosphere for our out-door dining on the terrace put the evening for another level.
I would perhaps stay here again, because of the location and the charming surroundings but why not stay in the city of Copenhagen, only 30 minutes away and take your care to Fredensborg for the day?

Booked a night here including dinner and breakfast in June 2007 based on excellent review in Frommers. The location near the Fredsenborg castle is very appealing, and a morning walk around the grounds was the best part of the visit.
Frommers rec getting a room with a view of the castle but front office staff were unaware of this and showed me the rooms on the castle side and there were no views. Most of the rooms were available since no one with any knowledge of the Store Kro would stay here. It is very shabby in and out I was tempted to ask for a paint brush.
The elevator is permanently closed, and no assistance was offered with luggage. The staff very sparse and I think a bit embarassed that they could be charging these outrageous rates.
I won't go into the dining experience or breakfast; just don't stay here unless you are getting a much better deal than I did!
