Worst hotel experience EVER!

My experience at the Hotel St Paul was, without a doubt, the worst I've ever had. Never mind that the halls are dark, the rooms are small and the beds are hard as rock. What made it impossible for me and my fiance to stay at this hotel was the fact that both the lobby and the rooms themselves reek of some kind of perfumed chemical! Upon checking in during the early afternoon, we noticed an overpowering perfume odor emanating through the lobby. I have traveled EXTENSIVELY for work and never before encountered a lobby that smelled like cheap car freshener. Our room was so bad that we asked to be moved to another room, and were told by the porter that they spray the rooms with "some kind of perfume" every day. I wound up dizzy and nauseous from the fumes and had to check out after only 2 hours! The front desk said they couldn't refund our money straightaway because we hadn't made our reservation directly through them, but said that would do so upon our online travel website faxing them a cancellation form. As soon as we could find another hotel room (no easy feat at the last minute in Old Montreal), we called our online travel website. As it turns out, the Hotel St Paul pulled a 180 and refused to refund our money!! I am still astounded, given that they admitted to spraying chemicals throughout the entire hotel and said they'd refund our money. Please, if you are at all sensitive to chemicals, think twice about setting foot in this very mediocre hotel!

The hotel staff tried to be professional and elegant, but fell short. Our room wasn't cleaned one day, even though the "clean room" sign was left on the door. I asked the concierge for a restaurant reservation at a particular restaurant....he said it was booked....my husband walked over and we not only got the reservation we had hoped for, but the excellent service as well. Of note, it was at the St. James Hotel a few blocks away!! That is where I would stay.

After reading the reviews here, my fiance and I were looking forward to our stay at Hotel St Paul. We arrived as scheduled, but upon entering the hotel lobby, we were accosted by a heavy perfume odor. I am sensitive to chemicals, but assumed it was the perfume of another guest in the lobby and that all would be fine once we went to our room. Not true. Our room was overwhelmed by a sickeningly sweet perfume-- so strong that my eyes started burning and my throat closed up! We immediately called the front desk to ask to be moved to another room. A porter was sent up to explain that ALL THE ROOMS ARE DOUSED WITH PERFUME UPON CLEANING EVERY DAY! He said he'd try to find us a room that had not yet been made up for the day. Well, upon moving, things were no better. The room REEKED, my head started pounding, my eyes continued burning. We opened all windows in the room and went for a short walk so that I could get some fresh air. When we returned, the fumes were still so strong that we knew we'd have to find another hotel (not easy in Old Town Montreal at the last minute). When we checked out (1.5 HOURS later-- this site makes you say you stayed at least 1 night), we were told that the hotel would be able to refund our $ for the first night only upon receiving a cancellation form from an online company however, once the online company got inolved, the hotel REFUSED to refund our $, arguing that we should not have checked in to begin with if we didn't want to stay! Hotel St Paul kept our $200, even though the fumes were so strong we couldn't breathe! Beware!
