I visited the Hotel Ustel in Brussels for three nights in late September 2006, and I found my small single room to be very clean and comfortable--much better than some of the earlier reviews of the hotel would suggest! By no means is the hotel luxurious, but I wasn't looking for that. As a middle-aged female traveller on my own, I wanted a reasonably priced, clean and convenient hotel, and that's exactly what I found.
The staff were always friendly and helpful, and they made me feel right at home from the start. Breakfasts were delicious, too, with a wide choice of food, including cereal, eggs, juice, sausages, cheeses, and cold meats, served in pleasant dining areas. The hotel has an attached restaurant where I had an excellent dinner on my first night. I'm really pleased that I found this hotel--the only thing that would have been better was if it were nearer the Grand Place in the center of Brussels. It's only about a 15-minute walk, but I was told that at night I might not feel safe walking back on my own, so after dark I took taxis. But even those didn't cost more than a few euros, so I didn't mind. I definitely recommend this hotel and would like to stay there again.
I went to Brussels with 4 other people and I booked a triple room and a double room. I stayed in the double room. The triple room was really spacious and exceeds my expectation. The double room was okay but both rooms' interiors are excellent and they were really clean. However, the double room i stayed in was next to the lift, so when I was in the room I always heard the creaking sound of the lifts being used. Another flaw about the hotel rooms would be the lack of water boiler. We dont usually have breakfast at the hotels when we're travelling. Instead, we have some foods with us most of the time and we usually bring tea and coffee to make hot drinks in the morning. Since, the both rooms did not have any we had to go to the staff to ask for some hot water. However, the staff were really nice. I would stay at this hotel again if i were to go to Brussels again :)
Excellent value for money in all respect, room size breakfast etc. Surrounding is a problem. We almost lost all luggage during check in but we managed to overman the thief on the lobby floor.
The day of depatrure we forgot some clothes in the room but it was impossible to find it despite we called back the same afternoon. During the two consecutive days and even payed a visit to the hotel when we came back to Brussels on the third day of our trip.
