Good location, but lacking in soulPosted: Tue, Jun 24 2008Location:

2I was looking at flats in the nearby neighborhoods of Merode and Montgomery, so this hotel was in the right place, and thanks to Hotwire at the right price for less than $100.
Still for a four star hotel, there was something missing. The staff seemed indifferent despite the near emptiness of the hotel, as my visit followed the freneticism of an EU summit by a day. But despite the hotel being empty, they gave me a twin double though surely a proper queen could have been available--and given the indifferent reception I received on arrival, I didn't feel inclined to ask. But what took the biscuit was a card that said "Please accept these refreshments with our compliments". Next to that grandiose card, which looked like a wedding invitation, was a forlorn 200ml bottle of Spa Blue. Since the card said refreshments with a plural, I checked the minibar to find a similarly forlorn set of beverages. I called the lobby and asked if the card applied to the contents of the minibar. The desk clerk said. "No, just the water". Brussels tap water is more than fine, so I wonder if it's worth the bother.
The sheets suck, as well. Crowne Plaza positions itself as a premium chain, but aside from the marble bathroom and the EUR 25 breakfast (Hotwire rates don't seem to include breakfast anywhere anymore), there's little really premium about this place other than location. Brussels has many, many better hotels.
