4It was 90F in Vienna with high humidity and afternoon/evening storms. We were thrilled to walk in a hotel room that had individual room controlled a/c that was turned on when we arrived at the peak of the afternoon heat.
We chose the Delta because of arriving at Sud Bahnhof and departing 2 days later to the airport by bus made it a good transport hub for us; it had air conditioning; and it only cost 85-105 Euros during the Euro2008 games when booked in advance through booking.com.
The walk from Sud to the hotel was hot--should have taken a taxi, which we did on the return for about 12E with bags, I think. The Sud is a major construction zone so not very attractive, then you go under the railroad overpass and arrive on the pedestrian shopping street that you can walk down to the cross street of the hotel.
We did not find the neighborhood alarming in any way. The retail area looks like it has seen better times, so now there is a mix of department stores, fitness centers, convenience stores, kebab shops, restaurants, etc. We didn't walk the entire length of the pedestrian street, but the only questionable stuff we saw was on one side street about two blocks south of the Delta--the sex shops, Internet cafes, etc. you usually find near train stations, but on a much smaller scale than around Frankfurt or other major stations I have used. People were in the outdoor seating areas of cafes until at least 9pm.
We had a great meal at a restaurant, takeout from WienerWald and the bakery, and several ice creams to deal with the heat. All from the pedestrian street. There is a Spar a few blocks south open until 7 or 8pm.
Our entrance to the lobby of the Delta lowered our expectations--hot, smoky, loud groups of people. But the desk staff efficiently checked us in and sent us to our fifth floor nonsmoking room.
It was heaven! Already cooled with comfortable beds inviting us to relax from the heat. Double was the two twins next to each other. Very small hanging clothes area and shelves. Desk area OK. Expensive Internet so we did not use. Good lighting! BBC on tv. No kettle, frig, or other extras. Bathroom was small, but functional. Nice fluffy towels, magnifying mirror, and an a/c vent or fan that starting blowing a few minutes after light turned on so never steamed up the mirror.
We didn't eat the 12E breakfast, going to the bakery instead.
From the hotel we walked to the S-bahn and U-bahn to do our sightseeing. Belvedere withing walking distance. I hope the Sud stations will be nicer and better integrated once the construction is completed. It would have been a great location for us if it hadn't been so darn hot that we were sweaty by the time we walked to the station, then stood on hot platforms waiting for hot trains.
Overall, I think this is a clean, comfortable 3.5* hotel with good food choices on the pedestrian street and just OK access to mass transit until the construction is finished.
