Location

The hotel's location makes it ideal for guests wanting to visit the many attractions in the immediate area or slightly further afield in Dorking or Guildford. Leith Hill Tower, which is the south of England's highest point, offers you some of the most spectacular, breathtaking views of the English countryside.

Polesden Lacey is also close by, a National Trust property and stately home where King George VI and the Queen Mother spent their honeymoon. Nearby is another National Trust property, Clandon Park, home to the Queen's Royal Surrey regiment museum.

Minutes away in the village of Dorking is England's largest vineyard, Denbies. Makers of fine English wines, they operate tours around the vineyards and have exhibition galleries and a fine restaurant. Dorking is also home to the UK's first country park, Box Hill, owned by the National Trust and designated a site of special scientific interest because of the rare orchids that grow there in the summer.

A little further away is the historic town of Guildford, dating back to Saxon times. Home to several museums, gardens and tourist attractions like Guildford Castle and Abbot's Hospital, the town has lots to see and do in addition to its fabulous shopping.

This was great! I just needed one night to stay in this exact area to avoid going unnecessarily home to London and back (long story) and this place just kind of popped up, but I really hope to go back there with my wife and spend a few nights and enjoy it properly. The hotel was very helpful by email and phone with my complicated annoying arrangements and the personal welcome was great too. I can't comment on the restaurant as I arrived too late to eat there (bother!) but they were lovely about providing soup and sandwiches to stop me fading away. Oh and great local beers too! Very nice breakfast and the dining room is incredibly 20s-posh with wood panelling and a nice fireplace. The village and the surrounding countryside are gorgeous - I've never before seen the Surrey Hills AONB but it is lovely - great walking (and orienteering!) country. The area, and this hotel, are the sort of place I would use to impress American friends with their Englishness! Just great. Room 5 has no view - well, some other roofs - which I would mind if I was staying longer but not when what I really needed was to be warm and comfy and fed for a night, and I was, to perfection! I would certainly go back to this nice place but next time it's a double room, and dinner.

This ought to be such a charming hotel. It's rather "dotty", in a pleasant way and the people are friendly, though perhaps too many foreign staff to permit real local colour. That said, the rooms are fine, especially the larger (chalet) rooms at the rear. Loads of space, peace and tranquility. Make sure to get the best price on the rooms. Weekends seem to offer better deals as this is primarily a business hotel, yet oddly ignores the potential for private customers. Quoted rates do not include breakfast. The dining room is a bit pretentious and "out of place" but the food in the bar is OK. Somehow the places works, in an idiosyncratic way. A shame because it could be so much better. But good value place to stay in the area. Especially good for mountain-bikers in the Hurtwood Forest.
