At the rear of the Holiday Inn Ashford Central is a grassed area with some tables and chairs for guests to enjoy a drink. Around the seating area are hanging flower baskets. The baskets are almost dead - no one has bothered to water them. This, in essence, symbolises this hotel. I last stayed here 18 months ago. At that time I was given the wrong room number and walked in on a rather surprised young lady who was in bed. When I did get my room there was an apple core under the dressing table and there was fluff and dust everywhere. Breakfast service was disasterous, and in fact downright off hand. I wrote a letter to the manager who apologised and offered me a complimentary upgrade at my next stay. When I booked this time I reminded them of that promise, but when I checked in no upgrade was provided. The staff were more pleasant this time, and my room was clean, although in need of refurbishment. It still has the standard Holiday Inn tiger stripe carpet (who ever thought that was a good idea?), there were marks on the paintwork, and the bathroom decor was very tired, including chips in the floor tiles. However, everything worked and the bed was comfortable. In the public rooms, brown and green seem to predominate. The dinner menu was standard H.I. fayre, so I decided to eat out and wandered into town - about a 20 minute walk. My review of Trattoria Romana is elsewhere in this site. Breakfast was good, despite a longish wait for fried eggs. Another plus point is plenty of free car parking on site. In summary, this is a middling Holiday Inn, which could be a lot better with some attention to detail. It's not that bad, and I would stay here again as it is conveniently located, but it is certainly not H.I at its best - which can be very good indeed!
