Casanova di Pescille - San Gimignano, Italy     

Casanova di Pecille does pretty much what it says on the tin. It's a farmhouse rather idiosyncratically converted into a series of en suite rooms. There are no public areas to speak of other than the breakfast room. I don't recognise the description given of the landlord by TripReviewer5. He was at all times courteous and helpful and more than happy to engage in conversation regarding potential visits. He also recommended several restaurants (La Vecchie Mura being the best value). Roberto is not a fluent English speaker but he tries hard. His English, needless to say, was infinitely superior to my Italian. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and our en suite shower room (although small) would bear favourable comparison with most four star hotels. The gardens and surrounding countryside were beatiful and the views of San Gimignano breathtaking (particularly in the afternoon/evening). The pool was well kept and clean. The provision of a PC with free Internet access was a useful bonus. ( i didn't realise how useful until I needed to communicate with my bank in England rather urgently!) Do not take on face value the 2km distance to San Gimignano. We laboured under the mis-aprehension that it would be possible to take an evening stroll into town. A car is absolutely essential even for that trip unless you are really serious walkers and even then the main road is quite dangerousand lacks footpaths. The only fly in the ointment was the standard of the breakfast provided. Clearly, economy ruled with regard to the coffee and fruit juice on offer. This was slightly (but not overwhelmingly) disappointing. The croissants, cheeses and fresh fruit were absolutely fine. On balance, I would highly recommend Casanova di Pescille for those of you seeking rural accommodation in Tuscany. I would caution against staying longer than a few days as it can become slightly claustrophobic after a while.

I see many reviews that reflect our experience. Upon the recommendation of my husband's brother-in-law, we drove from Milano to Tuscana just to see San Gimignano --he also suggested Casanova di Piscille. When we got there we were exhausted because of all the stops and detours we took along the way --the scenery beconned us to stop again and again. Our room was ready and fragrant with what appeared to be fresh lavender. Our window opened to a full view of San Gimignano. What a treat! The bathroom was impecably clean, the bed was comfy, breakfast was plentiful and Roberto was as friendly as we wanted him to be. In short, one of the best experiences we have ever had. We will return!
