Location

Binz is the biggest coastal resort on the island of Rügen. It is situated at one of the most beautiful bays of the island, the Porer Wiek. Due to its sandy beaches and nearly 2 000 sunny hours per year, Binz is a well-known and recommended destination for your vacation.

Beside the beach and the sea Binz has a lot to offer, like gorgeous houses and villas from the turn of the century and the long beach promenade (4.5 km) that invites to relax, to go shopping and to enjoy the many restaurants and cafés.

Since 1994 the 370m long sea bridge extends into the sea and now serves as favoured viewpoint to admire the beauty of Binz.

When we booked The Am Meer at a cost of 200+ euros per night we were entitled to expect something a little special. We have travelled quite a bit through Germany and usually find the hotels give good value for money. However whilst the Am Meer is happy to charge deluxe prices it certainly does not offer deluxe service. The reception area is plain and promotional posters everywhere made it look cheap. The room itself was a corner room and supposedly an upgrade. In reality it was an average sized room with a bathroom which was very small. Besides which it was on the first floor directly over the bar. Luckily we are not really early birds and the bar winds down pretty early anyway. The mini bar wasn't stocked properly( we will forgive them for the opened bottle of sparkling water which was in there!) which shows lack of attention to detail. Breakfast was fine but we felt they could have used a bit of imagination on the buffet. We ate in the restaurant twice and again it was just ok. For a hotel of this standard it should be better. The service staff however were all charming and very helpful. The one thing that did leave a bad taste was the 8 euro a day charge for car parking. Parking is a problem in Binz but the hotel know that and to sneakily charge 8 euro a day when we are already paying 200 euro per night is poor practice. On the plus side the location is very good and the staff are great but they are charging at least 50% more than the service they are delivering. You need to up your game Am Meer!
