Location

Beach, Panoramic View

Ancient city of the Gulf of Policastro, dating from Greek times, Maratea is the only portion of Lucania on the Tyrrhenian Sea, along which it stretches for about 30 Km.It is both spectator and creator of an enchanting coastline, enlived with rocks and shallows, creeks and caves, big and small beaches, and dotted with pines, olive trees, oaks, carobs and holm-oaks.
The age-old vegetation, with a riot of wild rosemary, myrtle and broom, hugs the slopes of the surrounding mountains, now standing out against the unfathomed depths of the sea, now curving down to melt into the Appennine range.
Perched on the side of Mount St.Blaise, the town, under the picturesque mantle of its reddish roofs, with its narrow little streets winding under ancient arches and its flights of well-worn steps, reaches out towards the sea, over whose transparent waters, ranging through a myriad colours from emerald to turquoise to periwinkle, the glorious sunsets spread their dying fire.
Against the background of a handful of fishermen's cottages dozing beside the water, the Port, harbouring both old fishing craft and modern boats, drinks in the bustle and chatter of its welcome visitors. Above it all, the Risern Christ, robed in white marble, appears to be bestowing a benediction upon the superb natural panorama.

I stayed in ther Hotel Gabbiano this month with approx 10 friends, as we were attending a wedding in Maratea. The location of the hotel is at the bottom of a very steep hill / mountain and you'll need to either have a car or hire a taxi if you want to explore, as it is far from everything. That said though, the hotel itself is in a stunning cove and is ideal if you want complete relaxation. The sea is completely clear and warm, and you can hire boats and canoes. The food in the hotel is of a good standard and is very reasonably priced, as is the wine. The triple room that we had was spacious and had lovely views over the sea. Most of the staff do not really speak English, but are very patient when you try to find the right phrase in your dictionary! I think we were the only English people in the hotel, but this added to the experience. So, a lovely relaxing trip, but the three days we were there was probably enough.

The Hotel Il Gabbiano has a little corner of Italy all to itself. If you want total isolation from the rest of Italy this is for you. Total relaxation assured. On arrival in July this year I was disappointed at first to find not one shop or bar with easy distance of this hotel. I soon learned to enjoy the relaxed isolation and lack of the usual Italian hustle and bustle. The nearest shop/tabachi, the only shop, was about 1 mile up a very steep winding narrow road. A car is essential if you want to get away from the hotel and into the villiage of Acquafredda di Matatea. The hotel itself was clean and comfortable with an excellent sea water swimming pool. The beach, very pebbly and rather steep, no sand. Food, the room and comfort were what you would expect in Italy and the staff were eager to please. Not much English spoken. At the end of the vacation I was actually sorry to leave.
