Duomo - Orvieto, Italy 

We thought the Hotel Duomo was a real find. Although it is located just a few steps off the piazza of the Duomo, it is so quiet, you'd never guess you were in the middle of a very busy tourist area. The rooms were immaculate and equipped with everything needed for the guests' comfort. it was easy to come by car: We followed the owner from a nearby parking lot back to the hotel. After we unloaded our bags, he drove the car to a lot where it was parked overnight for a nominal fee. The decor might be unusual for this area but, frankly, after days of looking at historical buildings, the contemporary art in the lobby and in the rooms was a breath of fresh air. We felt the breakfast was more than adequate...a typical European continental breakfast. We found the owners to be very professional and business-like. They were ready to accommodate their guests in every way. They don't seem to speak a lot of English, which must make their job more difficult, but with their English and our very limited Italian, we communicated very well. We would definitely recommend Hotel Duomo to anyone visiting Orvieto.

The Duomo is a very good hotel situated within yards of the Duomo Square. Arrival was a bit fraught as a Orvieto has beautiful but narrow streets. However, we parked up and walked to the hotel and the proprietor then went with me to get the car and then parked it in the hotel car park nearby. The staff we found not to be the friendliest we encountered, if they smiled it would be so much better. Requests were met with brusque replies, as if it was all too much trouble. The room was very good with an excellent bathroom and the terrace area, which was grassed and had tables and chairs was a pleasant place to take a drink. The breakfast was pretty dire, little choice with orange drink not juice, it seemed as if they were trying to reduce the budget, and all served without the semblance of a smile. All in all a good hotel in a perfect location, spoiled to some extent by less than freindly staff and a poor breakfast
