Astoria Design Hotel - Opatija, Croatia     

I totally enjoyed my stay the this lovely, stylish, modern , quiet, and intelligently designed hotel. The buffet breakfast is delicious. The staff was caring, efficient and helpful to me. I loved this hotel and look forward to returning there. My future hope is to return to Opatija with my husband, Sean. Happy travels. Thank you, Elaine O'Brien

We had been to Opatija twice (** and *** hotels) before we decided to stay at Design Hotel Astoria for two nights to celebrate a special anniversary (birthday of my significant other). Based on the reviews here my expectations were high. Compared to the hotels in Opatija I personally know the Design Hotel Astoria does indeed impress with its clean but warm architecture and interior design. BUT unfortunately there were some things that disappointed us. Upon check-in the receptionist was indifferent/unfriendly. This was the case with almost any staff member on the site. Maybe it is too much to expect a warm welcome and a smile. Or at least eye-contact. Example: I had announced we would arrive at 1 p.m. due to the traffice we were 1 hour late but the room wasn't ready until 2:30 p.m. No apology for that. We booked a deluxe room (#507) which was small (equally small as standard rooms I was told) but had a great sea view. Nevertheless I was disappointed because when I booked the room online the room description said it had a bathtub which it didn't have. I immediately complained at the reception but the answer (in short) was: "either sea view or bathtub". The water in the shower didn’t drain very well but even after I informed the receptionist the next morning nothing was done to solve the problem. One word about the breakfast: the offered variety was good but the service staff was not very attentive. I really wanted to love this hotel since I was so attracted to the modern design but the overall experience just spoilt our stay.
