I must admit I am not a fan of writing reviews, but after reading the comment of Sodium_8, I decided to change my habits and submit a review to relate my experience of Chateau de La Barre, and of Sodium_8's visit, as I was there at the same time, on June 18th and 19th. What a contrast between the graciousness and warmth of Guy and Marnie, the hosts of Chateau de La Barre and the abyssmally rude and disturbed behaviour of the guests sodium_8! From the sublime to the ridiculous. Fortunately, I only met this unpleasant couple briefly, as they stumbled down the stairs close to noon for breakfast and I was returning from a stroll through the garden prior to departing for a days sightseeing. The screams and paranoid attitude of Sodium_8 couldn't fail to catch my attention, it was more than disturbing, and with another couple of guests staying, as well as a travel journalist, we were really shocked and troubled by their odd comportment. We also felt extremely sorry for Guy and Marnie who displayed an exemplary calm and tolerant approach in such an embarrassing situation. Truly gracious. When I went up to my room to collect my wallet I realised that the very strong and odd chemical smell that I had noticed all along the corridor and in the staircase earlier that morning was actually coming from the room they were occupying. The next thing I heard was a car screetching on the gravel, leaving heavy treadmarks on its way, as they apparently left in a fit. My experience at Chateau de La Barre went on to be one of the most enchanting. Romantic gardens to enjoy a light snack in, superb antiques throughout, quiet and comfortable rooms, maps and suggestions of lovely sights to see in the area, and especially, hosts whose authentic warm welcome makes you feel instantly at home. The dinner in the grand dinning room on Thursday night was a highlight in my stay in France, with a successful mix of elegance and "joie de vivre". I trust my review will give a true impression of the spirit of this elegant and wonderful chateau and family home, and that guests like Sodium_8 will refrain from travelling.

We have just spent wonderful 3 nights at the chateau and cannot praise the experience highly enough. The chateau itself is beautifully furnished and decorated and the grounds are really lovely. The owners, Guy and Marnie, were very welcoming and gracious and went to great lengths to ensure our stay was as comfortable as possible including providing us with a light meal when we arrived on a holiday when everything else was closed. Dinner the following night was spectacular as were the accompanying wines. Guy is a born raconteur and enthralled us with his account of the chateau's history and it's place in French history. We were provided with information and suggestions on places of interest to visit during our stay as well as in Paris which was our next destination. For people wanting a unique and luxurious chateau experience, I would highly recommend Chateau de la Barre and would ignore reviews which suggest this is less than a wonderful place to stay.
