Location

During Roman times, Vieste took its name from Vesta, the hearth goddess. The castle, situated on the hilltop, was built by Frederick the second of Swabia in 1240 to defend the town against attacks from the sea. Today, the castle is still preserved in good condition and plays host to the navy.

The old town has a characteristic appearance; along its many streets and stairs which lead to the cathedral you can find art from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as a wooden statue representing the Madonna di Merino, the patron saint.

Over the centuries nature has created beautiful rock sculptures such as Pizzomunno, a monolith 30 metres high which emerges from the sea near the town, or the rock arch of Architello di San Felice.
