We stayed at the imperial hotel as part of a tour group so didn't actually choose to stay there. Our first impression was also that it looked terrible from the outside (and the foyer stank) but once in the room it was fine. The decor had been updated and was quite comfortable. I agree with the previou poster about all the points about the room so won't repeat them....yes the bathrooms are for midgets! The breakfast was the best breakfast we had in our entire 5 week europe trip! Excellent! Overall the hotel was quite good. Tram easy into the city/marianplatz area for shopping and touristy sights etc would probably not choose to stay there as 20 mins from main town but also wouldn't mind if was told I was staying there.
