Intercontinental D - Dusseldorf, Germany 

This hotel was truly exceptional -- and I stay in a lot of hotels. The location is great, at least for tourists and appeared to be close to the business district as well. It's right across the street from the main shopping area and a very short walk to the old town, pubs and museums. The hotel itself is beautiful. A large, modern lobby leads to fast elevators that will only stop on the floor on which you're staying (for security purposes). Check-in was super quick and the front desk person very helpful in terms of orientation. Even though I arrived before noon, there was no problem getting a room immediately. My standard room overlooked the interior/lobby of the hotel and was totally quiet. It was of average size but well laid out and appointed. There is a large flatscreen TV, a comfortable desk/workstation and king-sized comfortable bed. The bathroom is marble, with separate tub and shower and wonderful heated floor! Plenty of bath amenities. Overall decor in hallways and rooms is dark wood with a modern flair. The concierge was particularly helpful, giving me great restaurant tips, attractions to visit, walking areas, etc. Made for a great day of touring. One tip: be sure to ask ahead of time whether a restaurant takes credit cards; many good restaurants do not. The hotel bar is intimate (which can be a problem for non-smokers in that smoking is allowed) and the service is good. Prices are a bit on the high side but, there are many alternatives within easy walking distance. Overall, service is excellent, but understated (i.e., the bellman doesn't try to grab your bag from you). Overall, this was a tremendous experience and, if you can afford it and like a large, modern hotel, well worth the price. No negatives. Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.
