Grand Hotel Zvon - Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic     

My wife and I stayed here one night in July 2008. The hotel location is superb, right on the impressive town square. You are right in the heart of things here - there are plenty of places to eat within a two minute walk. Check-in and check-out was highly efficient and the staff spoke good English. We booked an executive room with a view of the square. It was absolutely enormous - the size of a smal flat. The furnishings were very modern and the room was clean. One downside - the window onto the square did indeed have a great view but it was tiny and not really adequate for the size of the room. You could only enjoy the view by walking right up to it and peering out. The room was well lit but lacking light due due to the small window. The in-room safe presented problems. I simply could not get it to work and ended up locking our things in twice. Calling the front desk brought a quick response and unlocking but there was clearly something lacking in the instructions. I emphasise that in hundreds of hotel stays this has never happened to me before! The bathroom was good but both my wife and I had trouble containing water in the shower area due to its design and so we had large puddles on the bathroom floor. At one point I thought Noah's Ark was going to come though. The bed was a little soft for my liking, The breakfast buffet was generally good but the hot food was a little lacking - it just looked as though it had been there too long - sausages excepted. In spite of the above grumbles I would still stay again. The location, spacious, well-furnished clean, room and good service overcome the niggles. This is probably one of the best places to stay in Ceske Budejovice.
