Myself and my family took our first ski holiday during the half term holidays and chose Bulgaria as a cheaper option than Europe. We stayed at the Flora apartments which is a recently built (2007)complex attached to the Flora Hotel. We found the apartment on Holiday Lettings .com and booked it directly with the private owners. We stayed in a studio apartment which was ideal for either two people or a family with upto 2 kids as there were two twin beds and a bouble pull out sofa. The studio was very well decorated and clean and comfortable. While there we used Hunters ski rental to book lift passes and lessons. They were very helpful and the instructor friendly although they were a little disorganised on the first day of arrival and didn't have any dedicated kids classes. The Flora was very nice although the restaurant was a big disappointment with a poor quality buffet. We only ate there one night as there were plenty of places to eat out very cheaply. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our week in Borovets and found it very family friendly. We will be returning.

Stayed at the flora hotel for Christmas then just back from flora apartment (private) April this year.
Our experience of the Flora hotel was nice but the food was awful which is why we stayed self catering on our return. Christmas evening gala didn't happen and we were seated on a table with 8 other people, whom were really nice, but honestly there was not one of us that could eat the food, we ended up going out for a meal at a local restaurant. The rooms are nice and cleaned daily. But DO NOT STAY HERE FOR XMAS - honestly you will be disappointed.
The food at Katrina's on the corner of the main road is excellent and extremely reasonable - they even made a birthday cake for my 17 yr old daughter with her name on it and candles for 17, lovely people. And the tattoo shop is great - clean - and cheap.
Bulgaria for skiing was great and thoroughly enjoyed it - on our first trip we used Hunters ski school, but there were quite a few mix ups as my youngest is 6 yr s old and although they say they cater for them - they don't. So in April we booked with a lady called Fiona (skiborovets@yahoo.com.au) who organised the whole ski packages' for us including 6 days tuition at ?300.00 less then any other school there - so if your looking for ski hire/packages etc, send her an email for a quote and you really won't go wrong - you also pay her on arrival - which obviously is better.
All in all i really wouldn't bother going H/B or AI ... as the food is in the hotels (as told to us by other people staying in even the top hotels ... just isn't any good - whereby the food on the strip in good reasonable and you get to eat when you want.
