Ionis Hotel Athens - Athens, Greece 

At the same price elsewhere I have experienced much decent place to stay. With the exception of the location "in Omonia" the hotel is not at all for a decent vacation. Dirty stinking lead road, average rooms and a very indifferent reception. The reception even on demand did not bother to provide with minor details like everything is closed on 1st of May including Bus services and the places to visit

The Ionis hotel isn't too far from Plaka, but the neighborhood surrounding the hotel was very questionable. Being from new york city, and living near Harlem, I thought I’d be fine with shady areas, but even I was concerned walking to the main tourist area even during the day, let alone after dark. One store down the block had been broken into leaving shattered glass everywhere and no one seemed concerned. Passed several adult video stores and "lounges" (understandably a staple for any big city), but as a young woman, felt uncomfortable with the leering men and few pedestrians. In fact, I’ve felt more at ease in Paris’s red-light district than the 5 block walk to Plaka. I suggest taking a taxi to and from the hotel. The hotel itself was fine, the concierge was helpful when trying to rebook ferry tickets. Hotel internet access was the cheapest I found on my entire trip. Beds were more comfortable than other hotels where I’ve stayed at in Greece. Our room had three beds for two of us. Blow dryer in bathroom didn’t work. Breakfast was nice, though it’s the exact same breakfast you’ll eat in any hotel in Greece so make sure if you’re staying more than one day to plan breakfast outside of the hotel one morning.
