Venice accommodation styles
Venice offers a great many accommodation types. Albergo is also a definition of a hotel, while pensione or locanda is usually a small family-run outfit similar to budget hotels. Locanda is among the most popular types of hotel in Venice. The majority of Venice hotels offer rooms furnished in classical Venetian style, which may include real antiques or their modern remakes. Students can choose among cheap deals, which include hostels or similar residences, in some cases housed in religious institutions and admitting guests only in summer.
Venice Hotel location
San Marco area and along the Grand Canal is a place of many luxury hotels. The Dorsoduro offers tranquil ambience and a wide range of hotel options, including designer hotels and cozy comfortable stays. If you'd prefer to stay in a palazzo, look for a hotel in San Polo. A great selection of budget and midrange hotels is to be found near the train station Sestieri di Santa Croce. There you'll find some classical hotels. More accommodation options are offered in Castello and on the islands.
Note that most Venice hotels have very few single rooms or none at all and the ones may not be as stylish and comfortable as the rest of hotel's rooms, so it might be best to go for a double whether you are alone or not.
Venice is not cheap in general but in low season you can count on better bargains. Low season in Venetian hotels usually means November to early December, and January to Easter, with exception of the New Year and the carnival. July and August is hottest time of year in Venice and is not too popular with tourists either. Because of seasonal differences, rooms in a hotel can range from 40 to 130 euros. Most rooms are supplied with a private bathroom.
Keep in mind that arriving in Venice late at night is not a good idea. You may have difficulty locating your hotel in the dark quiet city with confusing streets. If you don't have a choice, just make sure to get some directions before you arrive in Venice.
